Chapter Six

One Month Later

Jace

I click the mouse and return to the inbox after submitting the updated application for the 3D printer. I was supposed to have everything done weeks ago, but it was too hard to breathe, let alone work. There’s no moment of euphoria or even a twinge of satisfaction. Yes, I’ve made it to the final hoop, and in a few months, the medical device I’ve worked on for years should be a reality. Yet, it has no meaning.

Sage leaving without looking back, haunts every second of my life. It was a setup. The box arriving at the office. Me opening it and discovering it belonged to her. The expectation that I’d be intrigued by the thought of using it on her. She played me to perfection. And the devastation still feels like a knife shoved into my skull as I waiver between despair and anger.

I scan my emails. This was something she used to do for me. Now, look who’s doing it? It’s been a month, and I haven’t done anything to look for a replacement. I haven’t even called a temp service.

After deleting some junk mail, I click on the email from David Hatch.

Jace, I wanted to let you know I offered your assistant a job. I didn’t want there to be any hard feelings.

Fuck. The knife twists tighter, wedging itself deeper for a more precise cut. So much for hoping she’d find some elderly woman to work for. No. She goes after David Hatch. One of the most dominant men in the business. I can’t be friends with him anymore. Hearing how they screw all over his office is not on my agenda. My finger hovers over the delete button, but I can’t do it. Even a morsel of knowledge about her proves stronger than my willpower to fight it.

She turned me down, which I find intriguing. She said she wasn’t sure if she was sticking around town or not. Can you talk to her? She was a great office manager for you. I’d love to have her on board.

We should grab lunch sometime and catch up. David

She turned him down. Relief surges through me. And no, I won’t talk to her for you. Do you think I’m stupid?

I blink. Sticking around town or not? I re-read the second part of the email again. What does that mean? Where is she going? My stomach clenches. I can’t let her leave town.

Shit. You have less than zero say in what she does.

I click on my keyboard.

David, I’m not in contact with her, so, unfortunately, I can’t put in a good word for you. Good luck with the office administrator hunt. Jace

Does that sound too abrupt? Oh, who cares. I groan and click the mouse sending the response to him.

Ring. Ring. My gaze darts to Sage’s desk like I’m expecting her to field my calls. Dude, that isn’t going to happen.

“Hello. This is Jace Roberts.”

“Jace?” The booming voice calls out over the line. Great. Abraham. Just what I need.
